The term "sansevieria bat" is associated with two distinct plant species: the succulent cultivar Sansevieria hallii 'Baseball Bat' and the tropical Black Bat Flower (Tacca chantrieri).
- Appearance: It features stout, thick, bluish-green, almost cylindrical leaves that grow in a fan shape from a basal rosette. The new leaves have a distinctive shape that gives the plant its common name.
-
Growth and care:
- It prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low-light conditions.
- As a drought-tolerant plant, it requires low water and should be allowed to dry out between waterings.
- It is suitable for growing indoors or on a balcony and is hardy enough for outdoor planting in warmer climates (USDA Zones 9a–11).
- Appearance: It produces deep purplish-black flowers that resemble a bat in flight, complete with long, whisker-like bracts that hang from the bloom. The foliage is broad, lush, and shiny.
-
Growth and care:
- It is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and thrives in warm, humid environments with dappled or shaded light.
- Unlike the Sansevieria, it is not drought-tolerant and should be kept in soil that is allowed to dry out only slightly between waterings.
