The Sansevieria 'Malawi Variegated', now classified under the genus

Dracaena, is a rare, low-maintenance snake plant prized by collectors for its distinctive foliag

  • Foliage: This plant has unique, thick, blade-like leaves that grow in a rosette formation.
  • Variegation: Its bottle-green leaves are accented with coppery-gold margins and sometimes described as having a "midnight" quality, with beautiful, unique patterns.
  • Architectural look: Like other snake plants, its upright, rigid leaves give it a striking, architectural form that makes it a popular choice for modern interior design.
  • Size: It is one of the smaller varieties of snake plants, often described as a "dwarf" type.
Care requirements
The 'Malawi Variegated' shares the same hardy, easy-to-care-for nature as other snake plants, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced plant owners.
  • Light: It thrives in a wide range of light conditions, from bright, indirect light to low light. However, too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. To maintain the best variegation, a brighter, indirect light spot is ideal.
  • Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as overwatering is the most common cause of root rot in these plants. Water sparingly, especially during the colder, darker winter months when growth slows.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as one designed for cacti or succulents, and ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent the roots from becoming waterlogged.
  • Temperature: The plant prefers average household temperatures between 15–24°C (60–75°F) and should be kept away from cold drafts and air vents.
  • Fertilizer: Feed sparingly with a general houseplant fertilizer at half-strength once or twice a year during the spring and summer. Do not fertilize in fall and winter.
  • Toxicity: Like all plants in the Dracaena(formerly Sansevieria) genus, this plant is toxic if ingested and should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
