Cadetia funiformis is a compact epiphyte featuring pseudobulbs, native to New Guinea and Queensland, Australia, often growing on other plants like trees or rocks. It produces aromatic white flowers with a brief lifespan. The plant's rhizome is creeping to hanging and branching, bearing narrowly ovoid to subcylindric pseudobulbs that are shiny and light green, becoming wrinkled over time. Each stem bears a single white flower with a purple or yellow marking at the lip's tip, known for a vanilla-like scent, though this varies. The plant flowers sequentially, resulting in a prolonged display despite individual blooms being short-lived, typically from spring to fall.
- Light: Requires medium to bright, indirect light (around 1500-2500 footcandles). It can tolerate some morning sun, but direct midday sun should be avoided to prevent leaf burn.
- Temperature: Prefers intermediate to warm conditions. Daytime temperatures should be between 22–33°C (72–92°F) in summer, and cooler in winter, around 12.5–24°C (55–75.5°F).
- Watering: The plant needs to be watered thoroughly when the potting medium is nearly dry. It prefers an overall humid, but not wet, media. Care should be taken not to let water sit in the crown of the plant to prevent rot.
- Humidity: Thrives in humidity levels between 50-70%, with good air circulation provided by a fan being beneficial.
- Potting Medium: A well-draining, airy orchid mix is essential to prevent root rot. A mix of bark, perlite, or calcined clay is suitable.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize weekly with a dilute, balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the colder, less active period of the year.
- Repotting: Repotting is rarely needed and should only be done when necessary (e.g., media breakdown). If repotting, use the smallest pot that will accommodate the plant to avoid overpotting.
