Hoya  wibergiae, presently classified as Hoya verticillata var. verticillata, is a highly prized tropical vining plant originating from the Philippines, specifically the Palawan region. It is extensively admired by collectors for its striking foliage that exhibits vibrant pink and purple hues when exposed to high light levels.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth and foliage color. While it can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun, avoid harsh, direct afternoon rays which can scorch the leaves. Exposure to bright light can cause the leaves to develop a beautiful reddish "sun-stressed" color.
  • Watering: As a semi-succulent, the plant stores water in its leaves and is sensitive to overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, watering thoroughly and letting excess water drain out. Water less frequently in winter when the plant's growth slows.
  • Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential to prevent root rot. A recommended blend includes equal parts orchid bark, perlite (or pumice), and peat or coco coir.
  • Temperature & Humidity: It thrives in a warm, humid environment. Optimal temperatures are between 65–85°F (18–29°C). While it tolerates average indoor humidity, levels of 50-70% or higher are preferred and encourage better growth and bigger leaves. Avoid cold drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations.
  • Fertilizer: Feed the plant monthly during the active growing season (spring to fall) using a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the winter months.
  • Repotting: Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound and bloom more prolifically when snug in their pot. Repot only every 2-3 years, or when roots are visibly circling the bottom of the pot, using a container only one to two inches wider in diameter.
  • Flowering: Mature plants may produce clusters of small, fragrant, orange or yellow flowers with red or purple centers. Do not cut the flower stalks (peduncles) after blooming, as new flowers will emerge from the same spot year after year.
